The Machine Stops

Machine Stops Draft 24 March 2010 The Machine Stop’s distributed in 1909 by E. M Forster is an astounding expectation of a future where people live underneath the outside of the earth in â€Å"The Machine. †Connected by something like the web and conveying just by webcam, all their needs is met and physical contact has gotten out of date. There is a great deal in this story that can be contrasted and our lives presently concerning reliance on innovation and the way that it controls our lives, I will talk about that in this paper alongside how this story and David Strong’s article can be thought about. I will attempt to dissect the time’s that Forster experienced childhood in and the effect they may have had on his perspective on the future, additionally the advantages and ruins of current advancements and a fast synopsis of the novella by Forster. The story happens beneath the earth’s surface in ‘The Machine. ’ The Machine thoroughly takes care of the individuals from playing music to making their beds. For instance in the event that they dropped something they didn’t need to twist around to get it, in light of the fact that the machine would lift the floor to their level. The Machine totally removes the requirement for the individuals to truly do anything for themselves. Kuno is the child of Vashti, a lady who like the others venerates the Machine. Kuno questions the machine and volunteers to leave the machine without consent to go to the outside of the earth to investigate. Once Kuno arrives at the surface the retouching device of the Machine traps him in light of the fact that on his excursion to the surface he tears the machine. After Kuno’s experience on the outside of the earth he gets in contact with his mom on the opposite side of the world to persuade her to visit him vis-à-vis so he can disclose his experience to her. Kuno persuades Vashti to take the aircraft to visit him regardless of the way that Vashti despises seeing the outside of the earth since it gives her â€Å"no ideas†. Once Vashti shows up Kuno clarifies his experience and discloses to her that he is being compromised with ‘homelessness’ which is likeness passing and that is the motivation behind why he needed to see her up close and personal and let her comprehend what occurred. Vashti can hardly imagine how this man is her child in light of his activities and convictions and not long after showing up she leaves revealing to him that they don't share anything for all intents and purpose. Vashti doesn't talk or attempt to get in touch with her child for a couple of years after. After at some point passes Kuno connects with his mom and reveals to her that The Machine stops, and he accepts the Machine is starting to close down. Kuno’s mother discovers this very interesting and passes over his thought, yet inside a brief timeframe Vashti starts to see that things are not working appropriately. Beginning with Vashti seeing the resting contraption was done working appropriately. The machine starts closing down and self-destructing. Kuno gets to Vashti and before she bites the dust can contact her and let her realize that there are individuals on a superficial level who won't commit a similar error of letting something like the machine happen once more. The way that I see this story and David Strong’s article meeting up is clear, Kuno and Vashti are the ideal portrayal of good versus products life. I say this regarding Kuno in light of the fact that the manner in which he is depicted shows that despite the fact that he has the entirety of his needs met by â€Å"The Machine† he is left unsatisfied. In addition to the fact that he is left unsatisfied he is left desolate and disengaged from the common world, to the point that he has lost his capacity to genuinely bolster himself. Vashti then again is an incredible case of an advancement trap in the manner that what she adored (innovation) is the thing that wound up executing her. The explanation I contrast her and an advancement trap is on the grounds that she was raised in the machine it was all she knew and it wound up gaining out of power and executed her and the remainder of its inhabitants, when they aimlessly acknowledged it as something to be thankful for not anticipating issues. E. M Forster’s story the Machine stops is an extraordinarily precise forecast of current occasions for when it was distributed. The advancements Forster makes we see now and furthermore a portion of the issues. The reliance we have on innovation presently is to where it is sketchy if a few people could make due without power, I don't get this' meaning to our social orders? Not to state that innovation is totally an awful thing yet in the event that you take a gander at medication for instance painkillers started as a treatment for individuals with extreme ailment and are presently being utilized as a recreational medication with many negative impacts. It appears that you can take a gander at most advancements and see where they are being misused because of their blemishes, should this be accused on the advances or us as the clients and inventers of them. E. M. Forster requests that his perusers envision a real existence wherein they are totally encircled and encased in innovation; encased in a little space, for example, a cell of a colony (Gunton and Stine 129). The short story is attempting to outline what might originate from a â€Å"society ‘perfected’ by innovation (Bryfonski 179). In spite of the fact that advancements do make our lives less complex from numerous points of view we can't let them assume control over our lives, and we ought not exclusively depend on innovation to do everything. From the get-go in The Machine Stops it is clarified that the machine makes its own governmental issues, human science, its own objectivity and its own religion (Bryfonski 179). It is nearly just as Forster’s production of the machine was a viewpoint to what he figured innovation could without much of a stretch become The characters in the short story have permitted the machine to â€Å"deaden their faculties and to dehumanize their emotions† (Gunton and Stine 129). The characters don't have a clue how to work without anyone else any longer in light of the fact that the Machine permits them to not need to think or care, it ‘takes care’ of that for the people. In the event that we let innovation thoroughly take care of us we will lose our own capacity to have an independent perspective. Despite the fact that innovation is a noteworthy piece of regular day to day existence for the normal individual and it is utilized to disentangle life, it can get overpowering. Innovation, whenever utilized astutely can have colossal advantages: remaining in contact with old loved ones, sparing someone’s life, helping you travel far and wide the conceivable outcomes are really unfathomable. A few associations and individuals in the public eye conceivably need to understand that there are consistently different sides to everything and, that yes innovations are made to support us yet in the event that we utilize the advancements inappropriately the equivalent mechanical world could pulverize us that is attempting to support us. The possibility of E. M. Forster’s The Machine Stops delineates very well the annihilation that could be made if people start to depend entirely on innovation in a possibly not all that emotional path all things considered. List of Strengths and Weaknesses What to Say in Your Job Interview

List of Strengths and Weaknesses What to Say in Your Job Interview Imagine yourself in a job interview. You are seated right there in front of the interview panel and everything so far is going well. All signs point to you getting the job and you are excited about it. You are doing all you can to maintain the momentum and not blow it in the last minute. Then someone on the panel drops the bombshell.“Tell us about some of your strengths and weaknesses”This is one part of the interview that nobody likes â€" except for the HR professionals and the hiring managers who can’t seem to let the chance pass. The good news is that just like it is with the other uncomfortable interview questions like “Where do you see yourself in 5 years?” or “Tell us about yourself”, you can prepare for this question and avoid messing all the progress that you have made so far in the interview. In fact, you can turn it to be an advantage for you in the interview because it is a chance to show off to your potential employers and show them that you really stand out.The reason why this question is dreaded by many people is the fact that despite knowing that it will be thrown at you, it always comes off as a trick question. So most people are left confused, not knowing what to say or do.When it comes to strengths, on one side, you could brag so much and end up sounding arrogant, and on the other side you could take the path of modesty and end up unattractive because you didn’t present your incredible skills and achievements. The weaknesses are also not any easy. You could try a lot of honesty and find that you have shot yourself on the foot, or you could hold back and lose credibility in their eyes.Either way, it doesn’t end up well for you.So which way should you take?Worry not, you are on the right page. We will look at ways you can use to turn this question to your advantage and leave the interviewers feeling like you are the right guy for the job.Let’s start with the strengths. PITFALLS TO AVOID IN JOB INTERVIEW WHEN TALKING ABOUT YOUR STRENGTHSWhen you are asked this question, there are things you can say and move directly from a candidate worth considering to one of the people to receive regret mail. Here are some common pitfalls that you should steer clear from:Don’t give a list of qualities taken from the job requirements section. Many interviewees give an answer close to this: “I’m an extremely detail-oriented, analytical, confident, efficient and very responsible in my duties”.Although such an answer might sound like exactly what they want to hear, they probably won’t believe you.Anyone can come up with a bunch of words boasting about how qualified they are for the position. The interviewer needs to know that you really mean what you say.Don’t give an irrelevant answer.Although the question is about your strengths, what the interviewer really wants to know is if you are a good fit.So telling them how good you are in golf or opening beer bot tles in parties won’t do you any good. Your answer should be honest and it should show that you understand the requirements of the position you are after.Don’t be too aggressive. You could have a track record that clearly shows that your skills are above average in your industry, but if you present it in an overly aggressive manner, you will come off as a dictator and that won’t work for you.Avoid the unrealistic strengths.Sometimes candidates will give answers that are too good to be true.Saying something like “I’m a focused individual who can do anything to get the job done. I’m so excited for the job that I won’t mind working 7 days a week just to prove my worth. I’m also very good with timelines hence I will never get to work late.” Your interviewer will see right through the answer.Instead of seeing passion, enthusiasm and determination to get the job done, your interviewers will see desperation and dishonesty, and that will make them doubt everything you have said in the interview.Don’t stuff your answer with strengths.Sometimes you will be given a number of strengths to talk about e.g. “Give us two strengths that will help you in this position” or sometimes you will get a general question and be left to decide how many strengths to give.Either way, your answer should not give more than three qualities that you consider useful in the position. If you have been given a number, stick to it. If not, give two or three.Avoid strengths that are weaknesses.Sometimes in a bid to impress the panel, candidates could say something like: “I’m a total workaholic. I don’t even have a social life anymore. When I’m working on a project, I forget about everything else until the project is done.”Although it may be intended to please, it really is a weakness. You are telling them that you have problems prioritizing things in your life. Work is important, but having a good balance is more desirable.Avoid answers that show your lack of confid ence in yourself. When talking about your strengths, you have the permission to brag a little. It will help you to show that you have confidence in your product. In an interview you are the product so if you are timid and unsure about your ability to deliver, you will only be giving them reasons why they should not hire you.Don’t avoid the question. As much as you hate the question, avoiding it won’t earn you points. Saying something like this won’t help: “I could give you a long list of strengths that make me a good fit for the job and bore you with details of how they helped me in my previous jobs. Instead, let me show you. Give me the job and you will see my strengths for yourself in person.”Don’t be too modest. Some people have a problem with self-promotion so they end up being too modest in their answers. Modesty is good, because you won’t come off as arrogant and proud, but too much of it could mean that you don’t get to talk about some of your great achievements. So feel free to blow your trumpet a little. That’s what they are looking for when they ask about your strengths. Now that we have addressed the pitfalls that you should avoid, let’s look at the things that you should do.HOW TO TALK ABOUT YOUR STRENGTHS IN A JOB INTERVIEWHere are some tips that will help you give an answer that will earn you points and give your interviewers a reason to vouch for you.Your answers should be tailored to the company and position you are applying to. Everyone on the other side of the panel doesn’t care if you are good at cooking, delegation or selling. All they want to know is if your skillset, experience and personality can help the company. They want to know if you can apply them to give an advantage to the company.Pick three positive qualities that you intend to mention in the interview. As mentioned above, having too many of them will do you more harm than good so sit down and think carefully about the things that make you shine as a person. You can make a list of all of them and pick the three that you feel will be important in the position you are applying for. What is that activity that gave you the most compliments? What are some of the things that cause time to fly?Use stories to back up your claims. Remember the last time you did something that gave an advantage to your company using a skill that you weren’t hired for? Tell them about it. For example, “Although I’m mainly a PHP Web Developer, I’m also very conversant with other programming languages like Java and Python. A few months ago in my current position, my company needed to move to a modern, responsive website that shows the energy and passion in the team. I was able to leverage my knowledge of Java to add some extra functionality and cool visual elements to the pages and the result was incredible. This would not have been possible with PHP alone.”The good thing about this question is that it is an open ended question. This means that you can take w hichever direction that you like and still have good results. You can even use it to fill holes in your resume by blocking any objections that they might have. For example, if you suspect that you’ve made too many job changes in your career and they will see you as a job hopper, you can use this question to turn it into an advantage by showing how this exposure to different industries helps you see things outside the box.Your goal as you come up with your answer is standing out from the other candidates. It will help you to put yourself in the shoes of your interviewer and try to pick a strength that is unique and attractive. For example, imagine you are interviewing for a marketing or accounting position. How many people do you think will claim to be “numbers” people? A lot. Instead of just saying that you are a numbers person, say something like this: “I’m a marketing campaign coordinator at ABC Marketing responsible with making sure that we get the most out of our campa igns. One of my favorite things to do is to evaluate the performance of campaigns and draw insights from the numbers. The other day I noticed that the areas where we were spending the most on advertisement were bringing in customers who spent the least and areas where we barely advertised were bringing in customers who were spending a lot. I then came up with a plan to redistribute the ad spend and the results were phenomenal! We were able to increase our sales by 17.5% from the same ad spend.” This says that you are a numbers person and you have a sharp eye for detail. Now let’s move to the weaknesses.PITFALLS TO AVOID IN JOB INTERVIEW WHEN TALKING ABOUT YOUR WEAKNESSESTalking about weaknesses is a very tricky thing in a job interview. Prepare adequately for it by avoiding these pitfalls:Yes, you do have a weakness.Although many people will agree that this is an innocuous question, avoiding it with something like “I can’t think of any relevant weaknesses” or  â€œI’m a po sitive person so I prefer to focus more on my strengths” won’t help you. Everybody has at least one weakness so be sure to think carefully about what you are going to say. There are weaknesses that every interviewer hears several times in almost every interview. Stay away from these. Saying that you are a perfectionist or workaholic will not help you to stand out from the other candidates, and standing out (in a good way) is your main agenda in any interview.By all means, do not lie.As much as there are traits that are desirable in the position you are seeking, lying to appear like the perfect candidate will not help you.The minute the interviewers think that you are being dishonest, you will lose all credibility and they will have a hard time believing anything else you have said in the interview.Avoid weaknesses that paint you in bad light. For example, don’t say something like “I am very outspoken and sometimes I feel like I share a lot â€" sometimes more than I should shar e.”It may be honest, but is also raises a red flag. The interviewer will be left wondering if you can be trusted with safeguarding the company’s secrets. You have not come for a therapy session so don’t just throw a list of weaknesses to your interviewers.Your goal is to show that you are qualified so share a story that shows that you know about the weakness, and more importantly, that you are working on it.Don’t place blame on anyone. It’s easy to blame your childhood, teachers, an old boss, siblings or anyone else for your weaknesses. The interviewers aren’t concerned about the source of your weakness. Instead, they want to know that it won’t affect your performance.DIFFERENT FORMATS USED BY INTERVIEWERS TO ASK THIS QUESTIONSometimes the interviewer will ask you directly for your weakness but other times, you will be asked in a different style. Let’s take a look at some of themTell us about a development goal you are currently working on. This one asks for your weak ness, but also looks for your ability to evaluate yourself honestly and come up with a plan to make an improvement. If I called your current manager, what would he/she say you need to work on? This one also asks for your weaknesses, but the phrasing is tricky. The idea of calling your current manager is meant to get more honesty out of you because at the back of your head you will be asking, “What if they actually call?”If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be? This one asks for one weakness and also the ability to honestly self-evaluate and come up with a plan to improve on your weaknesses. What area of your life would you want to improve in the next one year? This approach is more positive, but it still asks about your weakness.HOW TO TALK ABOUT YOUR WEAKNESSES IN A JOB INTERVIEWNow that we know what not to do, let’s dive in and look at how to answer this question.Be authentic. Honesty is one important thing interviewers are looking for when they ask abou t your weakness. You are going to make a better impression with sincerity than with a false weakness that sounds good. However, don’t pick a weakness that makes you look bad.Pick a weakness that is fixable. Your interviewers are looking for two things when they ask for your weaknesses: honest self-evaluation and some self-improvement. So picking a weakness that is fixable and showing that you are already working on fixing it will earn you some points. For example, you can say something like this: “Ever since my days in college, I have always had trouble sharing responsibilities. I have trouble trusting others with work when I know I can produce better results. So if I need to share a task, I get impatient when I suspect that the other person isn’t doing it right. I have spoken to my supervisor about this weakness and together we have come up with goals and timelines for each goal. I have even enrolled in a team building workshop. I’m gradually learning to trust others. My su pervisor says that we are making progress. In fact, I was recently given the responsibility of leading a group of 6 people from my department in preparing our end of year presentation. It was a trying three weeks of my life, but I was able to get everyone involved and we received very good feedback at the end.”If you can’t find a weakness that’s fixable, give one that won’t affect your ability to perform on the job you are interviewing for. An example would be something like this: “I have a hard time working with others in a team. I don’t like it when I put a lot of effort towards achieving a goal, only to be let down by a member of the team who lacks the motivation to pull their weight. That’s one of the reasons why I decided to become a truck driver. I get to spend most of my time alone and my results are determined by my own efforts.”Just like it is with strengths, have three weaknesses ready when going for the interview. You might be asked to give one, two or thr ee. If you have not been given a number, give one and say that it is your biggest weakness. This way, you will not be guilty of saying that you have only one weakness, and at the same time you will not be giving them too many imperfections.A smart tip when you are asked about your strengths and weaknesses in one question is to start with your weaknesses. This means that you will have to finish with your strengths, hence the interviewers will be likely to focus more on the strengths when asking follow up questions.

The Freedom Of The United States - 901 Words

As we all know, freedom is a very meaningful word, and it has a variety expressions and definitions. I can define the word freedom as liberty, independence, acting spontaneously, expressing yourself with no fears, being positive and making your own choices. All people in the entire world like to be free with no barrier or any kind of obstacles, emotionally and physically. Human beings deserve to be free and live their life with no struggles. The most moment I felt entirely free is when I went back home to my country, Morocco, to visit my family after a period living in the U.S. I personally prefer to be free from any complications, but it’s a pretty difficult in our society as a Muslim girl to be permitted to do something without control. Moreover, we are prohibited for certain things than in the US, for example going at night to have fun with friends or having a dinner at a late hour. Since I got married, I decided to move and live with my husband because he works and live in the US. In the beginning, it was a little hard for me to leave my parents and live in a far country than my homeland. However, I realized that I will have a lot of opportunities and chances in the US such as freedom. 12 Ways to Find the Best Freelance Writing Jobs

Youre struggling financially this month. You havent landed any new freelance writing jobs and the jobs you have right now, are from a content mill that pays $.02/word! Ouch! You dont get it because you keep hearing in Facebook groups or on other freelance writing blogs how writers are making a full-time income writing for small businesses. They have no shortage of work coming to them and its high paying work too and here you are, with bottom of the barrel rates for writing articles that take up all your free time to write. This isnt right. Yes! Youre right! This is not what freelance writers should be making. Freelance writer Carrie Madormo said this to me the other day When I wrote lifestyle content for a major hospital, I charged $500 for a post. And I routinely make $600 a post for digital marketing writing. Now, to be truthful, I didnt charge this much for my writing when I first became a freelance writer. But, over time, I found where the best freelance writing jobs are. And guess what? They arent on job boards (although this is a great way to break into freelance writing. So dont knock it!)! So, if youve been freelance writing for a while, stuck writing for pennies and want to start getting some high-paying clients, then check out these 12 highly profitable ways to find them! 1. Your Writer Website Your writer website is absolutely the BEST way to find high-paying clients. Your writer website is attracting prospects that want to pay you big bucks. How can that be? On my writer website, I make sure to niche down to one freelance writing niche. This is important because businesses dont want a jack of all trades. They want a writer that exclusively knows all about breastfeeding, pregnancy, email marketing, Pinterest, air fryers, essential oils, law, dentistry etc I also speak to my ideal client on my writer website. Do you live and breathe digital marketing? I want to only work with clients that know and breathe digital marketing. Whether its content about that subject or a marketer that understands the true value content has, I know that I only want to collaborate with those types of clients. For example, a study by serpIQ showed that the top ranking posts in Google were over 2,000 words long. You want to align yourself with these types of people that know how content converts (if long form-content is your service). When your writer website speaks to your ideal client and shows what a great writer you are, youll start attracting those high-paying clients. If you need help creating an optimized writer website to attract the right type of clients, make sure to check out Writer Website in a Weekend! 2. Networking While having a writer website can attract the right type of clients, networking can help you make a living as a writer! I love networking, but for many bloggers, its not a topic they write about. Why? I think because the concept is boring or at least not popular (wont garner any shares or social chatter). But, networking is so important for freelance writers and bloggers that Ive created course lessons on this and even have a blog post all about it on this blog. If you arent sure, networking is the idea of developing relationships with others strategically. There is a purpose of connecting with other freelance writers, bloggers, or business owners. A great example of networking is reaching out to a blog owner to guest post on their site. This can help you gain a paying gig as it did for me! Thats the power of networking. Another time, I landed a great gig writing on a popular blog. Because of my connection to this blog, influencers started featuring me on their popular sites or referencing my blog. This, in turn, grew my brand more and helped me attract even better high-paying clients. So, as you can see, networking coupled with your writer website is powerful and highly effective tools in your arsenal. 3. Referrals I love picking up a gig from referral business. Its awesome because the lead is vetted and trusted. You know that the project is a great project, and the potential client will be a great client. Why? Because your current amazing client referred you to their network of business owners (networking sneaking in again!). Thats why its important to wow your clients and provide the best type of articles you can oh, and be professional about it also! How do you get a referral? You can ask the client point blank. I have done that on social media and I landed a gig that way. But, I find the best referrals are unsolicited. Unsolicited referral 4. LinkedIn Many freelance writers have had success using LinkedIn to find high-paying gigs. Why is this a great place? Because professionals, businesses, and brands are on LinkedIn. Think of it as the business Facebook platform. To use LinkedIn effectively, make sure you call yourself a freelance writer for hire and mention your niche. In your bio, make sure to state what your services are and who your ideal client is. I would also link to your writer website or samples. Finally, make sure to use my LinkedIn hack to boost more views on your profile. 5. Guest Posting Believe or not, but guest posting can be a very effective way to find high-paying clients especially if your guest post is on a popular site where your potential clients hang out. While this strategy may be giving away your content for free, I would beg to differ. There is always a goal to guest posting, and it doesnt have to be monetary. You might want to guest post to: Grow your brand Build your writing portfolio Show your expertise in your niche Connect with potential clients Gain a backlink Improve your writing Land a freelance writing job So, when guest posting, have a reason for doing this. And, guest posting is a way to find high-paying freelance writing jobs. If that is your goal, I wouldnt go and try to find paid guest posting sites. These may be too niched and can take months for your article to be published. Instead, I would try to land guest spots on popular brands like Elephant Journal or Thrive Global. Both of these sites receive over 1 million visitors a month making them great places to guest post on. I would also do some research on bloggers guest posting on other popular sites like Entrepreneur to make sure you land a guest spot on a popular blog. 6. Cold Pitching Cold pitching is a very strong strategy to find high-paying clients. But, this was not my best strategy for me. As a mom with twins, cold pitching took too much time out of my schedule. I found optimizing my writer website and networking to be my bread and butter. Cold pitching, though, is a very attractive way to find clients for many new freelance writers. And its attractive because you can usually find some really great projects and awesome clients too. Essentially, businesses arent advertising for a freelance writer. Its up to you to win them over and show them why they need YOU as a content writer. Using this strategy means you need a killer pitch and know your niche very well. To be effective with cold pitching, you need to know the brands you want to work for or at least find reputable brands quickly. A hack is to find companies that have hired freelancers in the past. If you know they have, then its much easier to convince business owners to hire a freelance writer for their projects. And, you can find out this information by using Contena. Contena is a job board that has much more than freelance writing jobs. Contena tracks companies that have hired writers in the past. As I mentioned, cold pitching is very time consuming, but if you want to devote to this tactic, then go for it! A lot of my Writeto1k students have had tremendous success with cold pitching. Need Other Ways to Find The Best Freelance Writing Jobs? The next batch of tactics are ones Ive never used, but my course students or other freelance writers have. Marketing agencies You can easily find recurring work since marketing agencies always need content writers for their clients. Conferences From the speakers to the attendees to even the sponsors of the conference, you can find high-paying clients in these industry-specific conferences. Other freelancers Did you know that graphic designers often need freelance writers? They have clients with a barren website and need a copywriter quick! Be that writer. Social media find active participants like marketers on social media. Use hashtags to seek them out #contentmarketing #inboundmarketing #emailmarketing Trade Associations practically any niche will have a trade association! Recruiting sites these websites recruit creatives. Try these places for high-paying work: Creative Circle, Artisan Creative, and Robert Half. Its Time to Explore There ya go! Twelve high level ways to find the best freelance writing jobs. Dont just stick to job boards to find all your work. Use them in the beginning and then move away from there by trying these different strategies! Over to you which strategy do you like the best or has worked for you the best? Free Essays on Rockefeller And Standard Oil... Rags To Riches... Greed Posing As Philanthropy

John D Rockefeller began as a humble oil business book-keeper in Cleveland, Ohio and in just seven years rose to control a tenth of the entire US oil industry. In the late 19th century the oil industry was a free-for-all, the law of the jungle ruled. Rockefeller used this 'individual freedom' to pursue several extremely successful, if deceitful tactics to accumulate capital. He would create new oil related companies such as engineering and pipeline firms that seemed to be independent operators. Rockefeller and his close colleagues secretly controlled the firms and gave Standard Oil of California, Rockefeller's main oil company, hidden rebates. Another tactic was to buy up a competing oil company, again secretly. Officials from this company could then be used very effectively to spy on, and give advanced warning of, deals being hatched by his real competitors. Probably the most effective secret deals done by Rockefeller and his partners were with the railroads. These 'in harmony' deals meant those refineries and oil traders not 'in harmony' with standard would find that railroads would refuse point blank to move their oil, whatever the price. Oil, of course, is free at source, so once the investment in refining and extraction plant has been made the only really important cost was transportation. Rockefeller's secret railroad rebates on the transportation of his oil kept his competitors guessing for years. None of them could understand how he kept pump prices so low. They were all bemused that Standard Oil had being growing at such a rate. How he managed to persuade the railroads to give him rebates and keep the deals secret is still not clear. Allun Nevins has produced an official biography ¹ of the Rockefeller empire but even he cannot help but question its morality. Aviation in the Global Context Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2750 words

Aviation in the Global Context - Essay Example This papers aims at critically evaluating the challenges and opportunities faced by airport planners today as well as critically accessing the response of airport operators in view of new airline customers and their needs. The evaluation is based on the statement that deregulation and liberalization have resulted in challenges and opportunities for both airlines and airports. Business models and networks continue to evolve. One of the major factors that are notable in the European aviation market according to Button et al, 1998 was the deregulation that was done in three packages that is in 1987, 1990, and 1992. Major aspect that led to deregulation of airline industries across the world was the deregulation of the domestic passenger air transport market in US in 1978. As the result of reducing the level of government regulations, most airline companies benefited from new opportunities that exposed them to increased profits even though there emerged challenges that needed the airline planners to make costly adjustments. Busby et al (1997) indicates that within the European market, significant number of trunk carriers reorganized their networks from point –to point into hub-and-spoke networks. Additionally, in their efforts to connect with other hubs worldwide, direct flights from medium airports to other medium airports were increasingly replaced by indirect flights through a central airport or hub. As the result of deregulation, Airey (2002) depicts that European airlines adopted wave-systems structures or intensified the existing structures. One of the notable challenges is that for the airlines to provide quality services that were in line with the government policies, they needed to intensify their wave-system structures by adding more waves or increasing the quality of the wave-system structure. For example, Air France adopted a six wave system at Paris CDG, which resulted into configuring the airport in a real

Materialism and Social Well-Being Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words

Materialism and Social Well-Being - Essay Example Just like any other issue within society, the issue of materialism faces both negative and positive criticism as will be revealed as we proceed by my research. Social well-being on the other hand is an end result state, in which human needs are met, most especially the basic human needs, bearing in mind that the not so wealthy also make up a considerably huge portion of the entire population. Social well-being also considers a fact that the people involved, even in the wider picture, are able to coexist peacefully and harmoniously in the community tending to even show signs and opportunities of the general public growing. It is common to hear or maybe participate in debates arguing upon how materialism in society affects the social wellbeing of the same. I set out to research a much similar case in which the main argument covered is whether or not materialism or what would in other terms be considered as income inequality in a country would or wouldn’t bring down and deteriora te the social well-being level of persons in the same country. It’s a common scenario to see a variation in individual’s lifestyles throughout the society. ... It came out clear that in the western countries, as well as in the UK and its environs, social well-being has faced increased collapse of intergenerational mobility. It is proven that, in developed countries such as the U.S. and the United Kingdom, the young youth, as well as children live a totally contrasting life to that of their parents and grandparents. It is evident that these children grow with very little expectation to improve from the condition in which they were born. In this case, the poor stay poor and the trend continues. Those individuals whom we could refer to as financially stable are in most cases ruled by materialism. This escalates to levels that, it comes a point when every decision they make is materialistic in nature at least to a certain extent. This only results to further degradation of the morals in society, as social well-being is given less consideration every time. Social well-being is best showed when members in a society or an entire community show emp athy towards their fellow members. In view of the current life styles as mentioned above, it is only true to say that there is an inverse relationship between materialism and social well-being. This is in that, individuals who have very high regard for material wealth or else those individuals and parties whom are considered to be materialistic in nature, tend to have little or no regard for social well-being on the other hand. They view with less regard issues concerning others and could at times be deemed to be selfish. It also works vice versa, that individuals who treasure and have high regard for social well-being, have little or no interest in material wealth. Social well-being also sees to it that the general state of affairs meets the basic needs of the populace.

There were no less than 56 countries involved in these World War 2. Most of them were fought out to the bitter and between equally well-trained and well-equipped armies. For our knowledge, the World War 2 was a war that was more cruel, bitter and vast than other war in the history. The war was taking part in vast air, land and sea battles. It turned World War 2 into a global conflict and ended it with the drawn of the nuclear era. World War 2 was a global military conflict lasting from year 1939 to 1945 which had been involved most of the worlds nations. It is including all of the great powers, which was organised into two opposing military alliances: the Allies and the Axis. The World War 2 was the most widespread war in the history, with more than 100 millions military personnel mobilised. The major participants placed their entire economic, industrial, and scientific capabilities at the services of the war effort, erasing the distinction between civilian and military resources. From the year 1939 to 1945, the Germanys military machine struck out and occupy most of the Western Europe, swept into deserts of North Africa and drove deep into the hinterlands of Russia. However, the Allies gathered strength and eventually crushed the Germany Army and Axis powers with a display of brute force that has remained unmatched to this day. In year 1939, Hitler invaded Poland on 1st September. After that, the Britain and France declare a war on Germany two days later. However, on the year 1940, there were a rationing started in the United Kingdom. Besides that, German started Blitzkrieg and succeeds preduce over Belgium, Holland and France. In the same year, the Churchill was became the Prime Minister of Britain. The British Expeditionary Force evacuated from Dunkirk. Hitler has to postpone his invasion plans when the British became the victory in the Battle of Britain. During 1941, the Europe was under Nazi control for the time being, the war was took on more on the global dimension. The gas chambers at Auschwitz were used when the bombing of British and German cities still continued, Hitler invaded Russia. In Hawaii, on 7th December 1941, the Japanese tired of American trade embargoes. They setup a surprise attack on the US Navy base of Pearl Harbor. In January 1942, the first Americans arrived in England, and they began their counter-offensive and snatch up Tobruk in June. The Blitz intensified in both England and Germany, by using the first thousand-bomber air raid on Cologne. Besides, the German was bombed the British cathedral cities. However, the Japanese was still continued their extension into Borneo, Java and Sumatra in the Pacific. In February, there are around 25,000 prisoners of war taken during the unassailable British stronghold of Singapore fell rapidly. During that time, many of them died in Japanese camps in the following year. Be sides that, there was a reversal of German fortunes during the second half of the year. The Montgomery gained was forced the British to voluntary in North Africa at El Alamein, and Russian also forces to counterattacked at Stalingrad. In the February of 1943, the Germany was surrender at Stalingrad. This is because they lose the bell by the Hitlers armies. However, the Battle still continued to frenzy in the Atlantic, and we can saw about 27 merchant vessels sunk by the Germany U-boats one four-day period in March. There was an integration of long-range aircraft and the codebreakers at the Bletchley during that time. In the mid of May 1943, the North Africa were forces by the Germany and Italian to surrendered to the Allies. So, the Allied victory in North Africa be capable of the invasion of Italy to be launched. As a result, there was a prompted to German to invasion into northern Italy. German armies was engaged the Allies in the South, it is to testify the slow and costly through the fight to Italy. At the same year, the Japanese at Guadalcanal was forces to overcame by US, and British and Indian armies began their guerrilla campaign in Burma. The long discussed was always postpones during the opening of the S econd Front in Europe. As a result, it was being prepared for the following year. Come to events of 1944, Japan began its last offensive in China. However, the major cities and lines of communication had limited to their control. Besides that, their resistance which often led by the Communist was widespread. There was a static campaign in central Italy during January 1944. After the allied bombing in February, the Germans counter-attacked and the fighting saw the destruction of the medieval monastery at Monte Cassino. The German retreat from Anzio at the end of May. However, Rome was liberated in June, which was the day before the Allies Operation Overload, now we known as the D-Day landings. As Operation Overload got underway, there are 6,500 vessels landed over 130,000 Allied forces on five Normandy beaches which are codenamed Utah, Omaha, Golf, Juno and Sword. Around 12,000 aircraft guarantee the air superiority for the Allies for bombing defences. However, they were unable to counter-attack with the necessary speed and strength after the landings caught the Ge rman by surprise. Nevertheless, at the end of June 1944, Cherbourg was liberated. Paris followed two months later. By the end of the August, the Russians had taken the Bucharest. Besides, the Estonia was taken just within the months, and the Budapest was under surrounded by the end of the year. In December 1944, around 19,000 Americans was killed by the Battle of the Bulge and delayed the Allies march into the Germany. In the year 1945, the New Year saw the Soviet liberation of Auschwitz, and the revelation of the sickening smuttiness of the Holocaust, its scale became more distinct as more camps were liberated in the following months. The Soviet army continued its offensive from the east in the March, while from the west the Allies determinate a bridge across the Rhine at Remagen. Meanwhile, the western Allies raced the Russians to be the first to Berlin. On 21 April, the Russian won. On 30th April, Hitler was killed himself, where two days after Mussolini had been captured and hanged by Italian partisans. While on 7 May, the Germany surrendered with term less. However, in the Pacific, it had continued to bile throughout this time. In the February, the Americans had inroad into Iwo Jima. Besides that, the Philippines and Okinawa string along with and Japanese forces to began withdraw from China. The Allied planned to invade Japan, but fears of fierce resistance and massive casualties prompted Harr y Truman. The new American president agrees the use of an atomic bomb to combat Japan. Since 1942, the atomic bomb had been in development. During 6 August, one of the bomb was fallen on the Japanese city of Hiroshima. After three days, there was another which fallen on Nagasaki. There had no other country that could withstand by such attacks, finally the Japanese surrendered on 14 August. The World War 2 was the biggest conflict in the history that had lasted almost six years. Around 100 million people had been militarised, and almost 50 million had been killed. For those who had died, 15 million of them were soldiers, and 20 million of them were Russian civilians. Besides, there were six million were Jews and over four million were poles. Nazi Germany is at the bottom of in the wake of the national shame, embarrassment, anger and resentment which resulting from the Treaty of Versailles. Nazi Germany had two official names which are known as the Deutsches Reich (German Reich), from 1933 to 1943 and Großdeutsches Reich (Greater German Reich). Germany was started the development into Greater Germany during the World War 2, which began in 1939 after Germany invaded Poland, jump-start the United Kingdom and France to declare a war on Germany. During the war, the Germany was subjugated and occupied most at Europe and Northern Africa. Besides, the Nazis persecuted and murdered millions of Jews and other minorities in the Holocaust Final Solution. Hitler was learned that the Soviet Union able to sign a non-aggression pact with Germany and would support an attack on Poland. As a result, Germany invaded Poland on 1 September 1939. After 2 days, the United Kingdom and Italy was declared a war on Germany. World War 2 was underway, but Poland fell quickly, especially after the Soviets attacked Poland on 17 September. In May 1940, Hitler ordered an attack on France through the Low Countries. The Battle of France ended with an overwhelming German victory. However, the British was refused Hitlers offer of peace, as a result, the war was continued. Germany and Britain was continued their fight at sea and in the air. Nevertheless, on 24 August, the two off-course German bombers was accidentally bombed London against Hitlers orders, it was the reason for changing the course of the war. In response to the attack, the British bombed Berlin, this was the reason which sent Hitler into a bile. Hitler hoped to break British morale and win peace. However, the British refused to back down. Germany and its allies invaded the Soviet Union on 22 June 1941. On the eve of the invasion, Hitler was formed a deputy which was known as Rudolf Hess, the reason of forming this deputy was attempted to negotiate terms of peace with the United Kingdom in an unofficial private meeting after crash-landing in Scotland. On 11 December 1941, four days after the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor, Nazi Germany was declared a war on the United States. This was not only a chance for Germany to strengthen its ties with Japan, but after months of anti-German hysteria in the American media and Lend-Lease aid to Britain, the leaking of Rainbow Five and the foreboding content of Franklin Delano Roosevelts Pearl Harbor speech made it clear to Hitler that the US could not be kept neutral. Germanys policy of ease up towards the US was designed to keep the US out of the war, but actually it was a burden to Germanys war effort. Germany had refrained from attacking American convoys, even if they were bound for the United Kingdom or the Soviet Union. By contrast, after Germany declared war on the US, the German navy began to unrestricted submarine warfare, by using U-Boats to attack ships without warning. The goal of Germanys navy, the Kriegsmarine, was to cut off Britains supply line. Under these instances, one of the most famous naval battles in history was took place, which was known as the German battleship  Bismarck. It was Germanys largest and most powerful warship, which attempting to break out into the Atlantic and raid supply ships heading for Britain. German U-Boats were more successful than surface raiders like Bismarck. However, Germany failed to make submarine production a top priority early on and by the time it did, the British and their allies were developing the technology and strategies to neutralize it. The Allied victory in the Battle of the Atlantic was achieved at a huge cost. Between the year 1939 and 1945, there were 3,500 Allied ships were sunk (gross tonnage 14.5 million) at a cost of 783 German U-Boats. On 30 April 1945, as the Battle for Berlin anger and the city was being overrun by Soviet forces, Hitler committed suicide in his underground bunker. After two days which was on 2 May 1945, German General Helmuth Weidling unconditionally surrendered Berlin to the Soviet General Vasily Chuikov. At the same time, the Hitler was succeeded by Grand Admiral Karl Dà ¶nitz as Reichs President and Dr. Joseph Goebbels as Reich Chancellor. There was no one that can be replace Hitler as the Fà ¼hrer, which was a position that Hitler abrogated in his will. However, the Goebbels committed were suicide in the Fà ¼hrerbunker a day after assuming office. The World War 2 was the largest and most demolish in human history, there were around 60 million dead across the world, which including almost 9 to 11 million people who perished during the Holocaust. The Soviet Union was lost around 27 million people during the war, almost half of them all were World War II casualties. Towards the end of the war, Europe had more than 40 million refugees, the European economy had collapsed, and 70% of the European industrial infrastructure was destroyed. Impact of World War II: Seclusion from the wars demolished, the most of the Americans predict that the World War 2 would shape their tomorrow. The war was physically undamaged and excitated the economically of the United States. Compared to other countries, the United State was loss around 400,000 uniformed personnel in the warface. President Franklin D. Roosevelt had given the United State few signals about what they need to expect, and voice them their broad desire due to the uncertain, secretive and exhausted by the war. Herein, most of the Americans viewed the wars impact as rising ruggedly during the antagonize. The postwar economy attracted worry and hope, nourished by the discourager and by give publicity to promise an economic reward for the wartime victimization. The hope lastly met because of the partly from the G.I Bill. Besides, some of them predict the wars result for the social relations. The World War 2 was destroyed the existing racial system by reaching federal power into the Jim Craw South. Besides, it also inoculates with the aspirations and tactics of the African Americans, and also rebuilds the national priorities. For those who want to wield power overseas and imitate the claim of defending freedom, the leaders need to increase to find out the racial differentiate as an anachronism that squandered resources, said by A. Philip Randolph. The war was rewrote the systems of the gender and the sexuality in more complicated ways. There was a guerdon for both male virtue and womens redound. Traditional family was contrivance during the wartime. The term was used to the damaged of many women and homosexuals. However, there had something in common even thought they were differences on their fortunes and social groups. Their fate was shaped by the Americas global power. After the war of World War 2, it impacts the war into a blurry future. The cold war had given permanence to temporary wartime improvisations in the national governance. Actually the World War 2 alone will not make anything happen, but it can be known as a set of the stage for it to happen. Costs, Casualties and Other Data: World War 2 diffuses death and destroys that we never seen before. We can just generally summarize the loss of life that occurs in the World War 2. World War 2 was unusual for the first time in the history. The numbers of civilians were killed greater than soldiers. In estimation, there were around 30,000,000 soldiers died in the World War 2. However, there were around 50,000,000 civilians that killed during the world war. WorldWarII-DeathsByCountry-Barchart.png Based on the cart above, we can see that the highest percentage that killed in the war was the Allied civilians which were 58%. The second ranks for the deaths were the Allied military, which were in the percentage of 25%. The deaths in the Axis were lock-in the least. The Axis military were 13% while the Axis civilians were only 4%. As we can realise, the worst in the total deaths (1945) were from the Poland based on the percentage of population (1939) in the Allies. However, for the Axis, the worst in the total deaths (1945) were from the Germany based on the percentage of population (1939). There were more than 18 million people been killed in the Poland during the World War II. Nevertheless, they were more than 10 million people killed in the Germany during the war. Military Casualties Those from United States, Great Britain, and the Commonwealth nations, their documents are most accurate and meaningful figures for the battle casualties. Those for other nations, Allied or Axis, the results are different in reliability. However, the Chinese figures are largely estimate because there are lacks of documentation. We can see the most accurate figures from the table that been provided. As we can see from the Table 1, the services that provide by the United States Armed Forces are army, navy, marine corps and coast guard. This table was shown the numbers of people that involve in casualties in World War 2. The total strength for the United Forces is 16,353,659. The total battle death is 292,131 while total deaths from other causes are 115.187. For those who in wounds, the total casualties are 671,801 and the total for captured or missing are around 139,709. Besides, Table 2 showed the figure of armed forces peak strength and battle deaths of the principle Allied Power. The nations that involved in the allied power was Australia, Belgium, Canada, China, Denmark, France, Greece, India, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, USSR, Union of South Africa, United Kingdom, United States, and Yugoslavia. The particular of the number can be view from the Table 2. As an example, the peak strength for Australia is 680,000 while the battle deaths are 23,365. However, the table 3 showed about the figure of armed forces peak strength and battle deaths of the Axis Power. The nations that contain in the axis power are Bulgaria, Finland, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Japan, and Romania. As an example, the peak strength for Bulgaria is 450,000 while the battle deaths are 10,000. There was a limited number of the casualties occurred in the battle deaths after the Bulgaria joined the allies. The meaning of total strength was the total numbers of personnel that belonging to the armed forces during the entire war. However, the peak strength is the greatest strength that reached at any one time during the World War 2. By using different methods to calculated the casualties will have different results. So, different reputable reference sometime will show us slightly different figures. Civilian Casualties As we know, the casualties among the civilian will be more less accurate compared to military casualties. We cannot avoid this because many of the civilian will escaped and run to another place before invaded armies or the consecutive air attacks on the major industrial centers. Some of them were sent to Germany or the Soviet for forced labour. The civilian casualties were caused by aircraft bombs, V-1(flying bombs), V-2, and artillery fire in United Kingdom. The total of numbers that been killed in the World War 2 was 60,595 while the numbers that in seriously injured was 86,182. As a result, the total civilian casualties in the London area were around 146,777 peoples. Killed Seriously injured Total Aircraft bombs 51,509 61,423 112,932 V-1 (flying bombs) 6,184 17,981 24,165 V-2 2,754 6,523 9,277 Artillery fire 148 255 403 Total 60,595 86,182 146,777 Industrial Conversion and War Production At the end, the winner goes to the Allied Powers technological Superiority. The technology superior of the allied power inclusive the ability to raise, arm, equip, move and supply superior forces all over the world. Other than that, they also able to broke up and destroyed the technological recourses of the Axis Nations. The United Stated was the one who provided with the raw materials, skilled manpower, and industrial that made their victory possible. However, they need lots of budget to serve their technology superior. As we can see from Table 4, we able to know the United States budget expenditures from year 1940 up to year 1945. All the figures are illustrated in Billions of dollar. The defense expenditures that included were war department, navy department, and other department. Beside the defense expenditures, the United State also provides nondefense expenditures in their budget expenditures. The total defense expenditures for 1940 were $1.9 billion while the nondefense expend itures were $5.3 billion. As we can see from the Table 4, the total defense expenditures and nondefense expenditures were keep on increasing until year 1944. The range were around $89($90.9 $1.9) for total defense expenditures, while range around $91.9($97.2 $5.3) for total nondefense expenditures. Lastly, the total defense expenditures were decrease to $59.8 at the year 1945. Other than that, the total nondefense expenditures also decrease to $66 at the same year. Elting Colonel, United States Army United States Military Academy Continuing impact of World War II: Even thought World War 2 have been passed long time ago, but the shadow of the impact were still remains observable. The World War 2 was generated a mythology that became in-depth in the popular culture. In US, they set up the American flag on Iwo Jima. Besides, they also build up the portrait of Germany Jewish girl Anne Frank. This is to memorial recognizes the nations sacrifice in the war. Meantime, they assumed that the idea of victim and perpetrator was a fresh circumstance. There was a lot of discussion about the Comfort Women. This term are known as the sex slaves of Japanese Soldiers during the war-time. Besides, there was a lot of debated on the impact of the strategic bombing on the civilians in Germany and Japan. In German and Japan, it found out that there were still have other categories of victims among the forced labor force. Besides, the Soviet Union concentration camps also had been found out in the same problems. The popular view of the war which are the sense of right and wrong has become blurred. The most secular heritage of the war has been the memory of the Holocaust in the West. This is the only single element of the war that attracted greater attention. The museums devotional the Holocaust and to Jewish history have been founded within the last two decades in Washington, Berlin, London, and other cities. The historical image if Adolf Hitler was still keeps alive in the memory of the Holocaust. The World War 2 had comprised of many different wars and all of the wars have their own causes. However, it is the most terrible war, and it also still remains the most ferly and notable legacy of the 1940s which was unleashed by Hitler against the Jewish people. It is the most furious and murderous decade of the modern times.
